Who stole my croissant

Style secrets of the French by Casilda Grigg

Is this the world’s most expensive nail polish?

Nail-biting prices: the nail polish range recently launched by French shoe designer Christian Louboutin

Possibly. It’s made by Christian Louboutin, the French shoe designer famous for his fire engine red soles, it’s sold at Selfridges and it costs a staggering £36 a bottle, darling. You can find it upstairs, next to the achingly glamorous Louboutin concession (pure theatre with a dash of S&M).

No one – surely – would spend that much on a bottle of nail polish, even if it is designed as an objet d’art in its own right with an eight-inch spike inspired by Louboutin’s highest heel (and possibly The Shard). Well, would you believe it the stand was being practically mobbed when I got there, so great was the excitement. I had to fight my way past a great swathe of designer handbags.

The colours are most peculiar but maybe that’s just me.

Finger on the pulse: the snazzy colours of RMK, the Japanese nail polish brand

Afterwards I went to the ground floor to feast my eyes on my latest nail polish find – RMK. It’s Japanese, the colours are seriously snazzy and it’s only £14 a pop, which makes it comparatively cheap. It’s in the store’s niche skincare area, right next to Blink, the zero-privacy salon where legions of desperate women have their eyebrows threaded en public. It’s also enticingly close to Chocolates and Stationery.

PS It’s worth looking at the Louboutin website just for its Disney meets Harry Potter atmosphere
