Who stole my croissant

Style secrets of the French by Casilda Grigg

10 things you didn’t know about Paris

I’m just back from a weekend in Paris. Conkers were falling from the horse chestnuts, shops were putting out their autumn clothes, but it was so warm that everybody was out in the Luxembourg Gardens, dozing, playing chess, gossiping and smoking. Nobody was bothering with dull things like running and power walking. I fell in love with Paris all over again.

I promise to tell you about all sorts of things – where the supermodel Natalia Vodianova goes for dinner, what you can save if you shop at Diptyque, where Woody Allen shot Midnight in Paris (and why you should go there), why Airbnb is the best thing since sliced baguette – but in the meantime here are the 10 things that most struck me:

1. Paris is a city of hairdressers, opticians, bakeries and bars

2. The typical Parisian male has an on off relationship with his razor (mostly off)

3. Poodles, the one-time accessory of chic Parisians, are in short supply

4. It is possible to spend an entire weekend in Paris without encountering a single vegetable (apart from potatoes)

5. People buy wine late at night but there is no public drunkenness in the street

6. Parisians are much less addicted to their Smartphones than we are

7. Ballet pumps are still a style staple

8. Parisian waiters are not as rude as they once were – in fact they’re often perfectly civil

9. Le tout Paris is desperate to get its hands on Valérie Trierweiler’s kiss-and-tell memoirs

10. If you get really homesick you can buy Bird’s Custard and Petticoat Tails at Le Bon Marché’s food hall
