Why are French girls slimmer than we are? A miracle juice to help you keep up

Do they run three miles before breakfast? Do they swim 30 lengths in the piscine municipale? Do they cycle for 40 minutes at their local gym?

Et bien, non!

There are four reasons why they are generally slimmer than we are:

1. Lots of them smoke
2. Lots of them skip supper
3. Most of them hardly drink
4. French girls do not snack – ever*

*except possibly on olives

That is why all those Parisian girls on the Ile de Ré this summer look so good in bikinis. It’s a combination of nicotine and starvation.

Now I am not advocating this regime for anybody. For one thing if we all stuck to the third rule the human race in the UK would probably die out entirely – and then where would we be?

I’m not advocating the first part either. If you’ve reached adulthood without a nicotine habit it would be madness to take up smoking now, not to mention very expensive.

But just so British girls can hold their heads high sur la plage I have asked my friend Elizabeth Peyton-Jones (pictured above), author of the revolutionary Eat Yourself Young, to come up with a juice that is youth-enhancing, stomach flattening, low on calories and fantastically good for you.

Paris Bikini Juice

‘This is spicy and hot with a wonderful sweet tang,’ says Elizabeth. ‘Regular consumption of this miracle juice first thing in the morning will help control your appetite and restrain that impulse to reach for the biscuit tin. Try to buy organic veg as otherwise you will get a concentrated dose of pesticides and insecticides.’

You will need:

3 large carrots
1 beetroot
1 lemon, peeled
1 x 1 inch of root ginger (or 2 if you like it really spicy)
Half a cucumber

Method:

Put all the ingredients through a juicer, adding water at the end if the consistency’s too thick. Drink at once.
